To meet increasing demand due to expansion of submarine cable business
Laying foundation to leap forward by developing large equipment independently

LS Cable & System (President & CEO, Roe-Hyun Myung) announced on April 2 that the company has completed construction of its Submarine Cable Plant No. 2 in Donghae City, Gangwon-do. With this new plant, production capacity has increased by 2.5 times.

Submarine Cable Plant No. 2 sits on a 104,000m² lot with its floor space of 8,800 m². The Construction began in March 2019 with about KRW 50 billion invested, and it took a little over a year to finish.

LS C&S explained that the completion of Submarine Cable Plant No. 2 would not only greatly increase its production capacity but also lay the foundation for a further leap forward 10 years after its advance into the submarine cable market in 2009.

The submarine cable business is expanding steadily as the number of offshore wind farms and expansion of large tourist islands have been increasing on every continent in recent years. In consideration of these trends, Submarine Cable Plant No. 2 has equipment that can produce, store and transport large quantities of extra-high-voltage cables.

“The submarine cable business has capitalized on its past experience to create a base for self-reliance and growth,” said Chairman, Cha-Yub Koo, Chairman of LS C&S, in his speech commemorating the completion of the plant. “The completion of the second plant is a declaration regarding the future, and a meaningful step toward the goal of being a ‘global cable solution leader.’”

It is important to continuously produce tens of km of submarine power cables within 30cm in diameter at once. To this end, large manufacturing equipment is essential. The equipment itself is an important element of competitiveness.

The company said that it has developed most of the equipment on its own, and in particular, there are only five large manufacturing facilities of this type in the entire world that are 50m-high (the height of an 18-story building). Significantly, the facility has an additional 5,000-ton turntable that can store 1,000 5-ton truckloads of cables in one location.

LS C&S did not hold the completion ceremony for the sake of social distancing, so only top management visited the business site and encouraged the employees.
