LS Cable & System announced on October 10 that the company has implemented the latest copper conductor production equipment at its Gyeongbuk Gumi Factory to improve the quality of submarine cables.

This equipment is capable of manufacturing conductors with a diameter of 6.5 mm, which is double the diameter of the previously manufactured cable conductors. This would reduce the number of conductors produced during the submarine cable manufacturing process while increasing the power transmission capabilities.

In addition, the conductors will be manufactured in the form of an arc rather than the generic round shape, which will maximize the space efficiency when it comes to integration and reduce the thickness of the manufactured cables.

This is a pre-emptive investment aimed at increasing power transmission capabilities with larger offshore wind farms. It will also be only the second such implementation in the world, following a power cable manufacturer in Europe.

A company spokesperson stated, “The demand for large-capacity cables is increasing following the commercialization of large offshore wind power generators with output greater than 10 MW,” and continued, “This investment is a part of our strategy to further improve our submarine cable business by securing world-class quality for our products.”

The competition between power cable manufacturers is heating up as they try to secure cable efficiency with the growing market demand for increased power transmission. As a result, efforts to improve the quality of raw materials, such as high-purity copper with a purity of 99.99%, and to implement the latest equipment are also increasing among cable manufacturers.
