      ■ World's first IDC solution combining superconducting cable and fault current limiter wins two awards
      ■ Transmits large-capacity power without loss and without additional substations, even at low voltage
      ■ Prevents spread of power outages and electrical fires in event of system accidents, and improves power supply reliability
      ■ No electromagnetic waves, requires substation 10% normal size, eco-friendly, economical, and highly acceptable by public

The innovative next-generation superconducting solution jointly developed by LS Cable & System and LS ELECTRIC has been officially recognized for its technological prowess by winning the CES Innovation Award announced ahead of the CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2025, the world’s largest consumer electronics and IT trade show, to be held in Las Vegas, USA, in January next year.

LS Cable & System announced on the 15th that HyperGrid NX, jointly developed by LS Cable & System and LS ELECTRIC, was selected as the winner in two categories, Smart Cities and Human Security for All, at the CES Innovation Awards 2025, which were unveiled on the 14th (U.S. local time).

The CES Innovation Awards are presented by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), the host of the CES trade show, to recognize world-leading innovative technologies and products.

The HyperGrid NX next-generation superconducting power system for eco-friendly urban data centers is an IDC (data center) power supply system that combines LS Cable & System's superconducting cable with LS ELECTRIC's superconducting fault current limiter.

The superconducting cable, which LS Cable & System commercialized for the first time in the world in 2019, maximizes transmission efficiency by utilizing the phenomenon of superconductivity, in which electrical resistance disappears at low temperatures. If an increase in power is needed to build an IDC, the transmission capacity can be increased by more than five times simply by replacing the cable.

LS ELECTRIC's superconducting fault current limiter is an essential device for protecting large-capacity, advanced industrial facilities. It immediately reduces fault current that occurs in the event of a power system accident, preventing damage to power facilities, electrical fires, and the spread of power outages.

HyperGrid NX, which combines technologies of the two companies, can transmit 154 kV of large-capacity power at the low voltage of 22.9 kV, enabling a smooth power supply without the need to build additional substations in urban areas. In addition, since no transformer is required, the device can be designed to be about 1/10 the size of a conventional substation, and the absence of electromagnetic waves ensures both economic efficiency and environmental friendliness.

Anticipating that HyperGrid NX will be the optimal solution for the recent explosive increase in the power demand of data centers, the two companies are more rapidly expanding their presence in the domestic and international commercial data center and AI training data center markets by emphasizing the product's economic feasibility, public acceptance, and power stability.

“Superconducting solutions will emerge as a powerful alternative for modernizing and expanding power transmission networks in the Trump era,” said an official from LS Cable & System. “Based on our domestic performance, we will expand our business overseas to the U.S., Vietnam, and other countries.”

An official from LS ELECTRIC predicted that “This superconducting solution created through synergy between the innovative future technologies of the two companies will become LS Group’s ‘killer solution’ for the future.” He added, "With this award as an opportunity, the company will accelerate its entry into the global market by emphasizing its overwhelming competitiveness in terms of economic feasibility, public acceptance, and power stability."
