LS Cable & System announced on the 7th that it has built a 3,000 kW solar power generation system at its submarine cable plant in Donghae-si, Gangwon-do, and begun operation.
The company decided to introduce this system to secure global competitiveness by reducing electricity costs and strengthening its eco-friendly production base.
The solar system can generate about 3,600 MWh of electricity per year, equivalent to the amount of electricity used by about 1,200 general households. It is projected to save up to KRW 7 billion in electricity costs over 20 years.
As global clients have recently been demanding that products be produced using renewable energy as a condition for bidding, this investment is also significant in terms of market response. In fact, companies such as Orsted, Europe’s largest renewable energy company, and TenneT, a German transmission grid operator, are actively pursuing the decarbonization of their supply chains.
In addition to building this solar system, LS Cable & System is also upgrading its ESG management system. Last December, the company became the first Korean cable manufacturer to receive official approval for its net-zero implementation goal from the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). It has also established a mid- to long-term reduction roadmap with the goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
“It is significant that the Donghae plant achieved its goal of using 100% renewable energy through the introduction of this solar power system,” said an official of LS Cable & System. “We will expand the use of renewable energy to our domestic and overseas workplaces in the future and build a low-carbon supply chain that meets RE100 and SBTi standards and customer demands.”
