LS Cable & System announced on the 14th that it has signed a framework contract with the UK's National Grid to supply high voltage direct current (HVDC) cables.
The National Grid, which oversees the UK’s power grid, is building large-scale transmission infrastructure on the UK mainland and in the North Sea region. It plans to supply and install cables for a total of 15 projects over the next eight years, and has set a budget of around £21.3 billion (about KRW 40 trillion) for these projects.
This framework contract was intended to select key suppliers in advance and establish a long-term cooperation system before proceeding with individual projects. Six suppliers from Europe, Japan and other countries, including LS Cable & System, participated in the contract, and project-specific contracts will be signed separately in the future.
According to this contract, LS Cable & System will participate in individual projects in the future and perform supply, installation, and connection construction for submarine and underground HVDC cables.
“LS Cable & System is the only company in Korea with experience supplying HVDC cables, and there are only six companies worldwide with this capability” said an official of LS Cable & System. “As supply cannot keep up with demand, companies around the world are taking proactive steps to secure supply.”
LS Cable & System developed HVDC cable technology for the first time in Korea in 2007 and has successfully completed all domestic HVDC projects, including the Bukdangjin-Godeok Projects 1 and 2, and the linkage of Jeju Projects 2 and 3. It also recorded orders for HVDC projects worth more than 3 trillion won overseas, including in the UK and Germany.
Meanwhile, LS Cable & System plans to begin construction of a submarine cable plant in Virginia, USA, in April, and is also actively reviewing plans to enter overseas markets, including the UK and Vietnam, in cooperation with LS Eco Energy and LS Marine Solutions.
